ASTM AISI 1045 Steel is a medium carbon, medium tensile steel supplied as hot rolled, forged or normalized. 1045 has good strength and impact properties, plus good machinability and reasonable weldability in the hot rolled or normalised condition. it has a low through hardening capability with sections up to around 60mm only generally recommended as suitable for through hardening and tempering. However 1045 steel can be successfully flame or induction hardened in the as rolled or normalised condition resulting in surface hardnesses of up to Rc 54 – Rc 60 depending upon the quenching medium employed, the type of set up and section size etc. Core strengths will not change.

Heat treament of SAE AISI 1045 steel

Forging
at 850°C – 1250°C, Hold until the temperature is uniform, Then Cool in furnace

Annealing
Heat to 800°C – 850°C , Slowly, Then Hold the temperature until uniform; Cool in heat treatment furnace.

Normalizing

Heat to 870°C – 920°C, Soak evenly, about Soak for 10 – 15 minutes, then Cool in air

Stress Relieving

Heat to 550°C – 660°C, Hold the temperature, Soak enough time, until thoroughly heat, then Cool in still air

Hardening

Heat to 820°C – 850°C, Soak for 10 – 15 minutes per 25mm of section, Quench in water or brine

Tempering

Re-heat to 400°C – 650°C as needs, Soak aboput 1 hours per 25mm of section, Cool in air.


Processing

ASTM 1045 Carbon steel round bar and flat sections can be cut to your required sizes. AISI 1045 Carbon steel ground bar can also be supplied, providing a high quality tool steel precision ground tool steel bar to your required tolerances. SAE 1045 Carbon steel is also available as Ground Flat Stock / Gauge Plate, in standard and nonstandard sizes.
